Finding Your Niche As A Writer/Author

When I started my writing journey as a writer and author, I spent a good amount of time thinking about what was important to me. What was I passionate about that would allow me to become a storyteller and do it on a consistent basis? While inspiration and motivation are important tools to doing something you love, some days you’re not going to have those things. But having consistency and discipline, those are things that will get you far in your journey.

The decision to write about social issues was a given and I think when you find your niche, it becomes empowering in your own little way. You know what you’re great at and you’re going to pursue it with all of the love and energy you have. You may not figure out your niche right away, it might take some time to figure that part out.

What I will say is, don’t follow the trends, don’t get caught up in what’s hot right now. It’s why it’s called trends, it comes and goes. While steamy romance and sci-fi fiction is trending now, there are other niches where you can carve your own path. You probably can incorporate two things into one the way I did. I write in a poetry prose format and discuss social issues, so it surely can be done, don’t hinder yourself.

We fail to try new things, experiment, do things outside of the norm because we fear being judged. I tried writing in a traditional way and it didn’t work for me. It’s why I made a decision to write in a poetry format, it allows me to stand out (which I realized after writing my first three books).

The best thing you can do for yourself as a writer is to write in different styles, write about different content, find what gets your juices flowing. It’s something you’ll thank yourself for later down the road. Go down your own path and road, don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. It’ll take away from your own road you’re going down.

Drive the car and be in control of your destiny. There’s so many niches and avenues you can go down. If you want to stand out and be the lone wolf, I’d write about things that people don’t normally pay attention to or read. I wrote a book about postpartum depression in women. That’s not common and it’s not something discussed enough in regard to social issues.

Be true to yourself, you could be the next bestselling author.

That’s my blog for today, thanks for reading, be good and go accomplish your goals!
