Ever since social media came into the landscape of our lives, we’ve used it in a myriad of ways. To connect with others, start and grow our own businesses, build bonds with people we would probably never meet in real life, and become friends with those we would never link up with if it weren’t for social media applications.
From MySpace to Facebook, YouTube, Vine, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and plenty of others, we’ve shared many different aspects and components of our lives. Sadly, the world has gotten to a place where people use social media as a scale for their happiness.
It’s about how many people like and engage with their posts, how many comments they get, how many views can a person get on a video they post. It’s less about impact and how much can a person get people to keep coming back to watch their content.
It’s become a popularity contest, keeping up with others, making thousands of dollars off of the content they create instead of creating something that is long lasting. It’s about getting ads and corporate sponsors for your videos, being an influencer instead of making something that’s just fun and engaging.
While it’s great to create content and make money off of it, if it’s done for the right reasons, then by all means, go for it. As long as the content that’s being created is fulfilling and not about it catering to how happy you’ll be when you get tons of likes, then you’re good.
When you use social media as a tool instead of a money making machine, you become more comfortable in creating content that’s worthwhile. I’ve learned that social media isn’t everything and that the content I post is for the engagement within my friends.
I write a lot of poetry, I create content that’s worthwhile and coming back to look at, at a later time. I post quotes that are relatable to life and can make people think for a moment. I’ve created videos about my journey as a writer and author.
Social media doesn’t define my happiness and it shouldn’t for you either. Use social media as a way to engage with others and not let it be the end all, be all of your life. Let’s not use it to compare our lives to others too.
That’s my blog for today, thanks for reading, be good and go accomplish your goals!
